Restoring Russian Icon

Mother-of God of Kazan icon restoration.

Restoration of Icons is very unique and very different than any paintings. The materials, which was used in creation of icon were primitive and define only for this type of paining. They were used for religious rites,therefore the damage to icon requests unusual approach.There were deterioration of primitive and very damaged varnish,drops of wax soot from candles settled and splashes of water.

The process

After careful examination, it was determine what kind of involvements is required.

Lost of pigment has to be covered by the paint, made with the same type of pigments , used by original artist.We had to replicate the original growing.

Final steps

Finally, we came to last and most important stage – preservation of this historical art .

Several layers of new varnish were applied for conservation.
